New Jersey Drivers Practice Test 2026 - Free DMV Practice Questions and Study Guide

Positioning your vehicle as far right as practical is a key aspect of safe driving according to New Jersey law. This practice helps to facilitate smoother traffic flow and allows room for vehicles or cyclists that may need to pass on the left. It also minimizes the risk of collisions with other vehicles, especially those that may be turning left or merging from the left lane.

When your vehicle is positioned correctly, it helps you maintain a safe distance from the edge of the roadway while also ensuring that you are not impeding the flow of traffic. This positioning also plays a part in being courteous to other drivers and is important for minimizing potential hazards on the road. Being in the left lane at all times or driving on the shoulder, for example, can create confusion for other drivers and lead to unsafe situations.
